The Gut & Bad Discs

DJD or degenerative joint disease occurs in the intervertebral disc of the spinal column. The intervertebral disc is what separate each of the vertebrae and act as shock absorbers in the spinal column. Over time these discs will begin to thin or degenerate. There are many factors that are responsible for this such as stress, injuries, excessive weight and poor posture. Recent studies have shown that the gut may also be a potential cause.

More and more studies have shown that the importance of the gut’s microbiome is essential to our overall wellness. Much of the essential microorganisms in the gut can only be in balance with a healthy lifestyle and diet. Foods that are rich in nutrients and essential vitamins need to be ingested to maintain the proper microbiome. We need to avoid processed foods and added sugars and other unhealthy foods to have a positive effect on the body. If we do not maintain a healthy diet, it will have a negative impact on our gut. Immune function and digestion as well as a host of other problems will occur if we do not care for our gut.

Research has shown that without proper care the gut may begin to leak and cause leaky gut syndrome. Toxins will begin to circulate in our systems and create inflammation. This can lead to skeletal muscular issues including degenerative disc disease. Studies have shown that patients with disc degeneration also had a higher concentration of gut bacteria that has led to an inflammatory response. The relationship between the two is just now starting to be recognized. The link between chronic pain and the gut is something that needs to be investigated.
