The Neck & Headaches

When a headache originates from neck problems it is referred to as cervicogenic. Since these types of headaches are a result of irritated nerve roots coming from the neck, many sufferers will see a chiropractor for relief. These types of patients are common in chiropractic practice.  With the complex arrangement of bones, muscles, nerves and connective tissue that support the neck area it is common that any area of dysfunction can cause pain and headache.

Each person is an individual, and certain factors might be unique to that person regarding daily stresses and activities that my also contribute to their headaches. The area that a chiropractor will focus on is the upper cervical spine. This is the occiput, which is the base of the skull, the Atlas which is the cervical vertebrae number 1 and the Axis which is cervical vertebrae number 2. Adjusting these areas will free up any impingement that may be occurring in those areas and often will relieve headache symptoms. Trap fibers as well as the paraspinal muscles will also be addressed by your chiropractor to aid and assists in your recovery from these debilitating headaches.
