Chiropractic has shown to be of great benefit to most people. There is still only so much the Doctor of Chiropractic can do for people who are struggling with health issues. Self-care and the things you do at home are of great importance to getting the maximum benefit of care. Specific home exercises as well as lifestyle changes are a must when trying to reach our goals of maximum recovery and wellness.
When a patient first has symptoms of pain it is called the acute phase. This is usually of sudden onset and is very painful, and restrictive. This phase can go on for a week or longer. It is very important during this phase to allow time to heal. This is when ice is of great benefit. Ice should be applied for about 15-20 minutes per hour. Ice is probably the best anti-inflammatory there is. It will help with swelling, spasms and pain. In this phase of your injury, I will usually instruct my patients to allow time to heal. We do not want to aggravate your injury with excess activity or exercise. Rest and ice are critical to get you through the acute phase of care. These techniques will be of great help when healing. Utilizing them as ongoing home care will also benefit your journey for better spinal hygiene
After the acute stage of care, we begin our sub-acute phase. This can last up to 6 weeks following your initial onset. This is when you want to implement specific exercises to help strengthen the injured areas. It is very important that we increase our range of motion. The connective tissue around the injured area may develop adhesions which can cause a significant decrease in normal function. We provide specific exercises and stretches to give you the best result when treating injuries.
If you are someone who has ongoing issues you may have a chronic condition. There may be flair ups from time to time that require we address the issue as acute. Otherwise, it is important to have a routine that helps you deal with the problem that may be permanent. Debilitating periods will be less often if you are committed to proper treatment of you condition or injuries.
