Lumbar Herniated Disc Management

Herniated disc in the lumbar spine is a common problem. Symptoms can be mild or of great consequence depending on the patient. Chiropractic care is of great benefit for patients with disc issues. These herniations can cause pressure on the nerves that exit the spine and can cause pain in the back or radiate down the legs. Shooting pain into the lower extremity is often the result of blown disc. Patients can experience pain, numbness or any abnormal sensation when suffering from a disc problem.

It is important to remain active to one’s pain tolerance. Repeated bending, twisting, and lifting can very easily exacerbate problems. Too much rest can also cause problems. Patients need to be careful not to let their muscles decondition. This can lead to discomfort that can worsen and become chronic.

Modification in activities of daily living like getting dressed and personal hygiene will be important for individuals with disc problems. Doctors of Chiropractic can give recommendations on how to alter your activities so as not to aggravate lumbar disc issues. There are simple stretches and life movement alterations that can help a patient live comfortably with a herniated disc.
