Low Back Stability, Neck Pain & Headaches

Low Back Stability, Neck Pain & Headaches

Neck pain and stiffness are common complaints that can last for years or even decades. While chiropractic care and exercises are two of the best approaches for managing this condition, focusing only on the neck may not be the best approach. Weak pelvic/low back stabilizing muscles can also contribute to neck pain. A group of physical therapists in Brazil and Australia performed a systematic literature review of the benefits of specific stabilization exercises for spinal and pelvic pain. They found significant research support for improving pelvic pain and preventing recurrence after an acute episode of low back pain. They also found that cervicogenic headache and neck pain improved from the use of low back/pelvic stabilization exercises. Researchers have found that patients achieve more significant improvement when stabilization exercises focus on the individual patient vs. a generic one size fits all stabilization program. Additionally, spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) has been reported as the most effective treatment for cervicogenic headache and neck pain patients. Other studies have found that the combination of exercise AND SMT is more effective than exercise alone.

Stabilizing the lower quarter (low back and pelvis) can offer the neck and head a better foundation on which to rest, similar to how a house with a weak foundation can result in the whole house being unstable. If you’re experiencing neck pain or stiffness, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Morgan Chiropractic. Our team of experts will help you understand your condition and provide you with the best possible treatment options.
